Woohoo your little one’s very first birthday is right around the corner! When it comes to throwing a first birthday you’ll probably find yourself scrolling through parties on Pinterest gathering all the details for the special day. We reached out to the amazing event planner Melinda Sandoval from Starry Eyed Events, to provide some great tips on throwing a first birthday party that the whole family will love looking back on.
Add photos of that gorgeous baby around the party! Have some photos of them from month 1-12 so guests can see how much your little one has grown in their first year. Don’t be afraid to get creative with it, arrange the photos in the shape of a “1” or the first letter of their name.
Use cake plates, vases, candlesticks, boxes, etc to decorate. These things can be used to decorate the food table, dessert table, favor table, etc. Anything with different heights helps add visual interest. Find things that match your color theme or cover a box with wrapping paper that matches your color theme.
Fill vases to incorporate the colors/theme of your party. You can use candy, gumballs, flowers, legos…anything to add a splash of color. When filling the vase, put in something to fill space first. For example, if you are using gumballs, fill the vase with an empty paper towel roll first and then put the gumballs around it. This saves money because it will give the effect that it is all gumballs, but you won’t need to buy as many.
Balloons are an easy & inexpensive way to add décor to any party. Marbled balloons are all the rage right now, they can even be found at your local Target! They’re also fun props to have behind the high chair during cake eating time for photos.
This is an easy and fun way to incorporate your theme. Your baby can keep it and play with it after the party…an added benefit.
Decorate the high chair! It’ll be the one place where he/she will be photographed the most so the perfect place to put decorations. Ribbon garland, tassel garland, name/ age banners, etc. all will work great & really brighten up any photo. Look around your house & see what fun stuff you find to decorate the high chair!
The guest of honor should be easy to spot, so a fabulous birthday hat or headband is the perfect accessory. And there’s nothing cuter than shopping for baby accessories.
Have a Smash Cake! Smash cakes are pretty inexpensive since they’re so small. You can usually walk into a store and find cute ones without even putting in an order. They are so cute and who doesn’t want a picture of their little will diving into their first birthday cake!?
I always recommend desserts bars over candy bars because really how many times have you craved a gumball over a cupcake, with that oh so fluffy frosting? You can easily incorporate colors and the theme by using cupcakes and cookies.
To keep the cost down, you can make your own cupcakes or purchase them from the grocery store. Cupcake toppers are an awesome way to play up the theme! You have a few options. You can go on etsy and purchase cupcake toppers or make them yourself. You can either download ones that match your theme or you can customize your own with a cupcake topper template and then edit them using PicMonkey.com.
A fun way to display cupcakes is by using a cupcake stand. Click here for a tutorial.
Custom sugar cookies are an awesome way to incorporate your theme into the desserts. Below are some examples of cookies that I have used at different parties.
Hopefully some of these tips will help inspire you as you create your baby’s first birthday party. Don’t forget to enjoy all the moments. So much of your time will go into planning so on the day of make sure to enjoy it all with family, friends and of course your all grown up 1 year old.
