While we know to carry the essentials in a diaper bag, moms have to be prepared for every uncertainty and emergency that might arise. Some of these items are obvious items to carry, but it never hurts to have a checklist… just in case!
Can you say diaper blow out? It happens more than you’ll ever be prepared for. So while it may be a no brainer that diapers and wipes should be packed in a diaper bag, take that extra moment before heading out the door to make sure you’re covered. Try to always carry 3-4 diapers plus at least a half a package of wipes.
Again, be prepared for the eventual overflow, as well as a change in weather or possibly staying out on the town later than you expected. Make sure you always have an extra outfit in case it gets colder, warmer, or baby decides to revisit lunch by spitting it up all over her onesie.
Along with the bottle and baby food, make sure to bring something for yourself to nosh on. Carrying or pushing a baby around burns more calories than you expect. Make sure you’re not passing out by the end of your outing. Pack some nuts, cheeses, protein bars, or whatever snacks you prefer. Don’t forget a big bottle of water, especially if you’re breastfeeding. It won’t be good for baby if you get dehydrated and dizzy when you’re out and about.
Where do all the socks go? We don’t know either. One minute, baby is wearing two socks, the next minute, one’s gone. While you’re frantically looking for the missing sock, the other one decides to disappear. Don’t try to solve the ages-old mystery. Just bring a back up pair of booties and everyone will be fine.
Somewhere, in a black hole, the pacifier and missing sock are mocking you. Don’t let them take you down, Mama! Bring an extra binkie or two, just in case. Or maybe you can buy a pacifier that clips on or doubles as a buddy, like these PaciPlushies by Nookums:
Now that you have the essentials, you’re going to need a diaper bag to put them all in. We came across the new line of Ju-Ju-Be bags at ABC Kids last week and they are super stylish and adorable, like the Sweet Scarlett bag at the top of this post. Here are a few others we found:
Tell us, Moms… what’s the one thing in your bag that you never leave home without?
